Sustainability
Sustainability is incredibly important to us. In fact, it is the primary reason Lilo Living exists. Lilo Living is a quality resale platform to keep furniture in circulation for years upon years.
Our theory, or our hypothesis if you will, is that a good proportion of people buy new because it's easier. And that's not a criticism. We're all incredibly time poor, heavily marketed to, and in some cases, our circumstances limit our choices.
When we buy new, items are displayed and styled well, delivery is always an option and payments are secure and seamless. Not to mention customer service is available (not always great, let's be honest, but it's available) and a purchase is protected by consumer law.
We believe that if we can provide a similar experience to purchasing second hand, people will simply choose second hand first.
Are we against buying new? Absolutely not. We are all for buying new from a quality retailer or furniture manufacturer.
It's on us to prove (or disprove) our hypothesis. We hope you can join us for the ride!
Sustainability Statistics
According to the Australian Furniture Association in their article Hidden Costs of Fast Furniture: Race Against Sustainability, Australian's discard 30,000 tonnes of commercial furniture annually, with 95% of this ending up in landfill.
Most of this waste is recyclable, yet infrastructure and systems to support proper recycling remain limited.
Measuring our Sustainability Impact
We are currently working on a way to best measure or quantify our sustainability impact.
Our focus is capturing real case studies of how we have saved pieces of furniture from ending up in 'the dump' / landfill.
This isn't about marketing our impact or 'greenwashing', it is about genuinely understanding the impact we're having so we can design our entire business around it.
As as new business, or 'start up' for the cool kids at the back, we have a lot to learn and no doubt a ton of mistakes to make, but we will always be guided by our sustainability impact.
Future Sustainability Initiatives
The list of initiatives is long, but here are a snippet of the key initiatives that we will be focusing on over 2025/2026.
- Transportation: achieving carbon neutral deliveries within our local delivery areas
- Operations: reducing our operational impact by maximising efficiencies, particularly in delivery
- Partnerships: working with retailers to achieve their sustainabiltiy initiatives and targets
